We Spent Our First Year Of Marriage Traveling The World!

After the wife and I got married…we decided that we wanted to spend the first year of marriage traveling as much as we could. We felt like we had everything we needed to jump-start our lives together so instead of spending our money on “things” we spent it all on experiences! I think it was the best decision we’ve made! Every single month we had a trip planned… whether it was just a short drive away from our house or a LONG flight to another country. Let me be the first to tell you that not only do you learn a lot about your significant other BUT you learn a lot about yourself!

As I look back on this past year I am so thankful for the stories we have to tell. From the time we almost missed our connecting flight in California, to the time we just laid on a catamaran while in Anguilla, or the time we road in some guys Porsche in Italy! These will always be the best days of my life…Of Our life together!

On top of learning different things about each other and collecting all of these memories… we learned so much about different cultures! It was crazy to see the way other people interact with each other. Their routines and how different they are… I just feel like it increased our overall openness and it made us realize that everything can be viewed in different ways. We had some of the best food and some of the nastiest! We got lost. We discovered new places. We met new people. There were language barriers. There was no wifi. We got drunk. We cried. We laughed so hard it hurt…. I could go on and on!

So I think the whole point of this blog is for me to tell you to DO IT! Take that trip with your significant other! Don’t worry about things and GO somewhere! Even if you’ve been married for a couple of years…plan some trips! These trips don’t have to be overseas…. They can be right around the corner from your house! You will learn so much about yourself and the person that you’re spending the rest of your life with!

  1. This is beautiful, Rae! I loved seeing the photos of you and Missy on your trips. It’s really special to find that person and experience new things with them! I haven’t traveled with an S.O. yet…but my family and I started taking road trips every year for the past 2-3 years. I’ve loved every minute of it, from the early mornings when we are EXHAUSTED and laughing deliriously throughout the day, to the shows and hotels and wonderful sights we see.

Like you said, the different cultures are great to see too! It’s so cool to learn about other customs. We went to Cambodia for the first time as a family (that was my first time traveling overseas!!! the plane rides were terrifying). Everyone stared at us like we were aliens, but we wound up making friends and understanding/adjusting to the culture by the end of the trip. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your experience and encouraging others to get out there!
